...Close! It isn't just restricted to original characters, but you've got the gist of it.
The most important part is that 'commissions' are for money.

When you commission an artist, it means you're hiring them to draw something of your choice... for a price. So they'll be expecting money.
For example, if you 'commissioned' me, I would ask you what you wanted me to draw (it could be one of your original characters, or a character that already exists from a TV show / video game, etc) and then I'd draw it...! Every artist has different prices, so it's best to ask THEM how much they would charge first, rather than risk insulting them with a low price. Sketches don't take very long, so they're cheapest, but if you want something coloured and cleaned up, expect to pay more. Usually something with lots of characters in it is more expensive, too.

Art Trade:
You draw something for them, and they draw something for you!

Art Request:
When you suggest something for an artist to draw on their own time for free.

Art Donation:
When an artist donates their work for a good cause, for fund raisers, as contest prizes, etc. These are donated on behalf of the artist without the expectation that they will be paid for their work.

Gift Art:
Kinda like a donation. If the artist actually says yes to this, it's free-- usually meant for someone's birthday, or for winning a contest of some kind.

Aw, thanks! I really enjoyed these characters.
Usually the more I like the subject matter, the better the commission turns out. ;P
