I don't know if anyone here has ever heard of the Canadian First Nation's author, Thompson Highway
, but this is my own interpretation of a character from one of his plays, known as 'Nanabush'.
He's written several stories about Native culture, one of them being The Rez Sisters
, which I read in my English 101 college class. Nanabush is meant to reflect an almost god-like spirit that can take on many forms, man or woman, animal or object.
The form that I tried to draw him in here is his Nighthawk form. During the story,The Rez Sisters
, he assumes this form to escort someone to the spirit world when they pass away.
Anyway, for some reason I've really been wanting to draw this guy. Seemed like a really bad-ass character, and it allowed me to finally draw something that reflects my experience with Canadian First Nation's culture, despite not actually being of first nation's descent.
The fun part about drawing this, is that the Reserve in the story isn't a real one, so I got to mix and match different styles and colour schemes to create my own unique look.
Hope you like it!
Let me know what you think.
